Just Breathe: A Mother’s Story by Honey Perkel
Ebookit.com, 2013
Just Breathe is a true story of personal tragedy. It is a story of changing dreams, of fighting to save a loved one through insurmountable odds, and of letting go. It is one mother’s journey to save her son—and, in the process, to save herself.
Honey Perkel wrote her memoir with admirable vulnerability. If you ask the author (I count her as a friend and had the luxury of doing so), she will tell you that although Just Breathe is not a book that she wanted to write, she is glad that she did.
Perkel’s memoir needs to be read at the right time in your life. Mothers who are in the midst of confidently rallying their troops may not connect with Perkel’s story. But mothers who have seen the first scare of regret, who fear what casualties today’s battle might bring, or who are piecing together a shattered remnant of what could have been, may find Perkel’s story to be their lifeline. I read it as a woman, not as a mother, and the story resonated with me.
Just Breathe is a reminder that women everywhere—and perhaps one right next to you today—are survivors.
What are you surviving?
